Indian Actress Anjana Bhowmick passes away

Veteran Bangla film actress of Kolkata Anjana Bhowmick, who shot to fame with her performance in the 1968 hit movie “Chowringhee” along with legendary Uttam Kumar, died at a private hospital in the city today, family sources said.

Anjana, 79,  who had been ailing for some time, died at around 10:30 am, they said. She was admitted to the hospital due to respiratory problems on February 16. She had been bedridden due to geriatric problems in recent months.

Anjana is survived by daughters Nilanjana Sengupta and Chandana Bhowmick. She is the mother-in-law of actor Jisshu Sengupta.

A popular actor during the 1960s-70s, Anjana earned audience acclaim for her acting in films like “Chowringhee” based on a novel by Shankar, “KakhonoMegh” ‘Thana Theke Aschhi’ “Nayika Sangbad” and “Pratham Basanta.”

Born in Coochbehar as Arati, Anjana moved to Kolkata while doing her graduation and joined the cinema world at the age of 20 making her debut in ‘Anustup Chhanda’ in 1964. She came to be known as Anjana from her original name Arati. The next year with “Thana Theke Aschhi” alongside Uttam Kumar, she was catapulted into the league of big names in the Bengali film industry.

Anjana appeared with Uttam Kumar in “Thana Theke Aschhi”, “Chowringhee,” Nayika Sangbad”, and “Kakhono Megh. She also acted alongside Soumitra Chatterjee in “Mahasweta” (1967).
